5 Must-Have Items Before Moving In to Your New Home

Written by Jaime Koh of HYJK Design, 01 January 2020

We get it, the anticipation is killing you. Your responsible ID sends you regular updates about your renovation, and after what seems like an eternity, it is finally in a state that’s ready for habitation. When your space is complete, the first thing you want to do is to move in as soon as possible. For a pleasant moving-in experience, ensure you’re equipped with the following 5 essential items.

5. Cable Ties

Nylon or with Velcro, it doesn’t really matter, as both will work. Their primary purpose in this context, is to help organise wires in areas such as your study and TV console. Properly organised cables trap less dust and simply looks neater!

4. Batteries

You can’t guarantee that all of the new appliances that you will take delivery of, will come equipped with batteries. In fact, some of these devices require lots of time to be set aside for set-up as well, so the last thing you’d want to do is to lengthen what may already be a frustrating tedious configuration procedure, by having to make a quick trip to your local convenience store to pick up the odd battery or two!

3. Mounting Tape

Chances are you’d have to hang up your wall decoration on your own (though we do so for our clients, you can contact us in the link below!). We recommend purchasing some quality mounting tape, which would save you hours of headache and hassle. 3M’s Command lineup is excellent for this, as they can be easily removed, should you mount something wrongly, without damage to the paint, and hold quite a decent amount of weight too.

2. Wet Wipes

Chemical washing and heavy-duty cleaning post-renovation can only do so much. The hard-to-reach places may often still caked in renovation dust, and cleaning it can be a pain. Wet wipes make mincemeat of any stubborn dust on any surface, so it’s essential to have a few packs on hand before moving in properly!

1. Scratch Protectors

Scratch protectors offer cheap insurance against scratches caused by your new floor and furniture not playing nicely with one another. Measure your furniture legs properly though, as these come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes!

You can find all of the items at all good DIY or hardware stores. Fun fact – we at HYJK Design present a ‘Home Starter Kit’ to all our clients as part of the handover process, with most of the items we’ve mentioned in the article already included.
